it’s very straightforward, almost to a fault but there’s something compelling about how stripped-down it is. the prison setting feels grounded, and the running sequences have a raw intensity that carries the film. not especially deep, but solid and focused in what it’s trying to do.

Another great Michael Mann film, it’s kind of hard to believe that he went on to direct a masterpiece like Thief after this, there’s nothing wrong with this film it’s just not as amazing as the more stylised films like Thief, Manhunter or Heat.
