I decided on a whim today that since I started the year by watching one of Huppert’s Claude Chabrol specials — MERCI POUR LE CHOCOLATE, I would watch another Huppert’s film to bookend 2023.
After random scrolls on Huppert’s filmography, I chanced upon this film, which I had known virtually nothing about. A stoner comedy translated as “MAMA WEED” starring Huppert as an Algerian woman? I had to tune in immediately.
You’d either enjoy Huppert play yet another female sociopath or realize how deeply problematic and manipulative Huppert’s character is towards the Arab and Asian communities (ask yourself who does Patience mainly steal, exploit and cheat of). Unfortunately, I was on both ends of this spectrum and quite conflicted to either praise or trash the film. I’m choosing to savor Huppert’s genius.
Through sheer coincidence at exactly 12:00am as I watched this film, Huppert’s character says “just joking” in French and I can begin to hear faint sounds of fireworks to usher in the new year. Soom after, we see Huppert briefly standing on her balcony watching fireworks in the sky. For some reason, it felt like a wholesome moment to cap the year.
The film also ends perfectly, gliding over pristine Omani waters on a beautiful boat with a background score to toot.
