The Pete Davidson movie has finally arrived! And I've got to say, it's pretty charming.
Pete Davidson plays Scott, who is like if Pete Davidson never got into comedy and made it onto SNL. It was so close to Pete Davidson's actual life story that I kept getting confused as to what was fiction and what I remembered from Pete's stand up. His movie father was a firefighter but died in a hotel as opposed to 9/11, for instance.
I watched this with my family and we were laughing pretty consistently through the movie. Though it might be one of Judd's more serious projects, there are enough comedians and gags in the film to keep things pretty lively.
As is the case with most Judd Apatow movies, the supporting cast is great. His daughter Maude really holds her own, I love Steve Buscemi, AND BILL BURR CAN ACT! I was very impressed by his performance, especially what he conveyed with his eyes. Judd Apatow is at his best when he is focusing on quirky love stories. His show Love and 40 Year Old Virgin both hinge on a captivating and unconventional chemistry between the two leads. The Burr-Tomei relationship falls into line with these others, being both grounded and endearing. At times I became more interested in that love story than I was in Pete Davidson's life.
Pete's character is supposed to be an asshole, but I thought they could have made him a little more interesting. Seth Rogen in Knocked Up, for instance, is always entertaining despite being kinda shitty to people in his life. Pete has a giddy energy that I've seen in the past which I would have liked to see here.
While I don't see it launching a major acting career for Pete, it is great to see a funny and original comedy in 2020. We could all use a good laugh right now.
