Ignores a lot of the information on the Vietnam war, which makes sense in the context of the documentary, however it seems irresponsible to make a portrait of a guy who dropped bombs on Laos without acknowledging the massive injustices committed by the United States. A very conflicting documentary for me, but ultimately the tragedy of Dieter resonates with me

Very complicated feelings about Dieter and Herzog’s choices in this documentary. It felt icky to have a whole cast of young Laotian men standing around silently, or play-acting as Dieter’s captors. I don’t know if Herzog did enough with the few humanizing shots of them. But Dieter is a fascinating subject and reading about his demise really shook me.
