Although it uses means for storytelling we’ve all seen before Space Sweepers manages to transcend the clichés that might’ve led it to detriment through it’s fantastic concept, the construction of the world around that story, and the gorgeous visual experience that breathes life into this concerningly plausible dystopian future. This is my fourth Kim Tae-ri movie and even though her performances in the others are clearly better my appreciation only grows, with the main other two in Little Forest and The Handmaiden being more serious dramas I liked seeing this fun role as a wild screen-commanding captain and it makes me even more excited to see where her career goes. As far as the negatives go in terms of the whole movie it’s pretty clearly the script that stands out in its weakness, even though it had its moments for the most part the dialogue was stale and offer much to the movie outside of world-building. Really though outside of the basic script I’m not finding many issues with it at all, like I said the visual experience is a wonderful spectacle and paired with the score it’s even better and the story itself brings great themes on environmental preservation and the wealthy’s deception against it while also giving some heartwarming character arcs and a fun enough core storyline to follow said characters in this world. I will say for the story I would’ve liked a better ending, I won’t spoil anything but if you’ve seen it you’ll understand, I wish they just committed to the epic conclusion instead of veering to the heartwarming one although I of course understand why they did it and can get behind that as well. A really fun watch that gave me so much more than I was expecting in some regards but sadly fell short of what I was hoping it could be in others, all in all the experience is just fantastic though and it’s one I’m sure I’ll have a lot of fun coming back to over the years.
