Safdie brothers just know how to stress the FUCKKKK out of the audience. I was quite utterly torn in terms of how I should feel about Lenny. On one hand, he’s a dad trying his best, a dad who only gets to see his kids for two weeks out of the entire year, a dad who obviously has a lot of love for his kids but just doesn’t know how to take care of them and doesn’t really know how to interact with them to be perfectly honest. He doesn’t even know what to do with his own life. It’s sad. On the other hand, he’s a terrible father and is extremely irresponsible. He makes bad decision after bad decision, puts his kids in harm’s way, and treats his friends and girlfriend terribly. I really want to sympathize with him due to how sad it is seeing him live life joylessly without his kids, but it is pretty clear that the way he acts is the exact reason why he’s in this situation in the first place. Anyway, what makes this so stressful is the circumstances Lenny puts his kids in. I mean there were so many moments when I was scared for them and couldn’t believe what Lenny was doing to them. The sleeping pill sequence was genuinely terrifying and little things like Lenny sending them alone to get groceries in NEW YORK FUCKING CITY just amped up the intensity. I really love the crummy New York indie underground style filmmaking with the handheld cameras, grainy look, and sort of non-coherent storyline. It’s more like a documentation of someone’s life than a movie. By the way, that mosquito scene was FUCKING NUTS MAN!!!! I loved that whole ending as a matter of fact, it was insane and really emphasized how batshit crazy the dad is. Ronald Bronstein delivers a fantastic and frantic performance that I highly adore. It was also cool seeing a few of the actors from The Pleasure of Being Robbed in this and of course Abel Ferrara as the robber. I need to see some of his movies man, I hear some good shit about them and seeing him in this was as great an introduction as I could have asked for. Okay bye now.
