this is the definitive Pinocchio adaptation!!! no hollywood bullshit, no cringe cgi, just vibes, tuscan dialect, poverty, trauma and a child puppet consistently making the worst decisions possible: nobody’s doing it like Comencini and they never will <33
it's the best Pinocchio adaptation ever made not just because it's the most faithful to Collodi's novel, but because it actually feels like the book—rough, tender, terrifying and deeply Italian in a way no glossy remake could ever replicate
the tuscan accents alone deserve a criterion release—you can smell the italian countryside through the screen
every shot is washed out like a faded memory, every character looks like they walked straight out of a neorealist film.
this isn’t a morality tale; it’s a feverish coming-of-age story where every adult is vaguely threatening, every act of disobedience ends in disaster and the line between fable and realism is paper-thin, and Comencini gets that.
