“This is sting, you’ve seen it before, haven’t you?” - Elijah Wood with the poop pen
Pros: Elijah Wood
Cons: Poop Pen
Actual Review
Story:
This story is all over the place, is this a comedy? Is this grim violence? Is this a family drama? I think we can have all 3, but the it’s lacking in all departments. The comedy hits maybe 50% of the time, the drama doesn’t hit at all, and the violence could have been explored more. The highlight is the violence. It’s done well and we get more of a connection with our main character in all of the violent scenes.
Characters:
Here lies my major issue. Lack of character development makes any family drama part of this movie uninteresting. We don’t care about Norval’s previous relationship with his father, we don’t even know who his father is until it abruptly gets thrown in our face. We don’t care about his past struggles or his family backstory which seem vital in this story. This makes it hard to care for the emotional scenes in this movie when it feels it hasn’t earned them.
Other Gripes:
We are told early on Norval is alcohol dependent and abstains from drinking, but one night alone with creaky pipes and he throws it all away? This aspect seems important until it is never mentioned again.
TLDR: Less family drama, more violence
