Art, by definition, is human expression through creative means. Can lust, sensuality, obsession be part of that expression? Sure, especially when inspiration is taken from real events. In that regard, I'm willing to treat In the Realm as more than just fantasy softcore pornography.
It is bold, mature and deals with a subject rarely ever touched in cinematic history prior to this. There's an attempt to deal with the plot with a sense of seriousness and to a certain extent it works.
That being said, I don't think of the Senses was a film for me. I have some respect for it but no strong appreciation.
