Bandits vs. Samurai Squadron
I can't rate this movie higher...I want to, but I can't. The music, the costumes, the sets and the action scenes are great. They are absolutely worthy of the "historical epic" category I would put this movie in. But the length, the intertwined plotlines, the massive cast...as a European, I simply lost the plot multiple times, due to my inability to remember the faces, names, and factions. This was my biggest problem with the movie, which is partially on me, partially on the movie's editing and (being based on a real era) the use of very similar costumes and armors also didn't helped differentiating between characters.

I was a bit disappointed, but I will watch it again someday, and will try to understand it fully.

Bandits vs. Samurai Squadron
So weird quite a while ago I had a dream about a film with this exact poster and stuff then when I first saw this one after the dream I realised where it came from
But finding out it was a longgg Gosha my hopes weren’t too high for it
I just haven’t really clicked with any of this stuff
And just how right I was
Even so I was really praying for this to be some campy epic
And while it had a lot of sleaze and cartoony vibes, it was genuinely just quite meh
And I didn’t like the sleaze a lot of the time
I hate to say it I really do, but lowk Nakadai just couldn’t bring it
I don’t think that was his fault ofc i really think the runtime and just story this told was rigged against him
But holy moly
Bewilderingly convoluted, glaringly confusing and unfocused
I mean really how could he even try
Even the combat was sloppily filmed and choreographed however great his presence was
This is the definition of falling short of the sum of its parts man
This really was just a waste of time
And I didn’t even get that happy feeling at the end I usually do when I finish a chanbara flick
I took a decent gap and did this in two halves, and in between I did actually find myself being pretty hyped for the second half
And then just got let down even harder bro
I’m still really happy to have watched it, and it wasn’t complete shit ofc
But wow it’s close tbh
I feel so mean rn man but this wasn’t even fun
How can something be fun when you can’t care at all about whatever’s happening
Whenever I got the slightest bit invested it would cut to something completely irrelevant or introduce a new character
Just finding ways to fuck it all up man
I could not even count for you how many things this chucks out and doesn’t really tie up at all
Like genuinely it’s so frustrating
Phew okay that’s out now
Yeah it wasn’t that good guys but hey they can’t all be winners
I wna watch a good chanbara soon have I just run out of them
Surely not
But I want to find one made for actions sake that can still have fun with itself and appreciate its own setting yk
This felt like it was made for tv like in a bad way
I thought this might be it dude I really did
Okay well there you go
It’s over now and im okay with that
