this is like the most solid samurai movie ever, not a single flaw too it. it's just very solid. imma try to explain everything i liked about this movie but the only thing i can really say about it at the moment is that this movie is definitely the best introduction u can have to samurai cinema, for the exception of ur kurosawas ofc. the story in this movie is an easily understood and accessible plot and tale of samurai honor and class struggle along with what it means to be human. i really liked the cinematography, some amazing shots throughout this movie and i love that in like every black and white samurai movie i watch there's always an extreme amount of fog which i find so cool for no reason. this is hideo gosha's debut film and for this to be his debut is just amazing imo, u can clearly see the potential in his filmmaking ability and the way he shoots those action scenes are just incredible. speaking on the action scenes, this has the best choreography in any samurai movie ever. some of those fights were spectacular and i can't believe this doesn't get the credit it deserves, the only recognition i ever see this getting is the fact that it has a criterion but nobody actually ever speaks about it. the composition is great aswell, some really good soundtracks throughout and that ending theme is so good. if i'd ever rewatch ANY samurai movie if im bored this would definitely be one of my top picks along with yojimbo and harakiri, despite this not being as great or thematically engaging as the other two, this is just such a fun and easily consumable movie.
good movie
