“i’ve wanted to die for a long time, but someone is always around.”𐔌 . ⋮ 🪭 .ᐟ ֹ ₊ ꒱
started this directly after finishing the book and am both very frustrated and honestly sad? don’t know if either of those words are right for this situation but i’m TRYINGfirst off, both versions had the opportunity to be amazing. the story is beautiful on its own and the themes it touches on mean the entire world to me. but looking back, there are a lot of issues that i was basically too blinded to see. lisa see’s works are colored by orientalism and basically written from the perspective of an outsider. it gives no depth to the asian experience despite her claims…this woman is 1/8 chinese. still good characters and i enjoy the writing style but yk!? saying i enjoyed it feels off. second, this film just honestly wasn’t good? the modern day storyline felt unnecessary and the writing + what they left out/barely touched on was very disappointing. storyline was sooooo rushed cause they were trying to fit too much in the 100 minute runtime. couldn’t build any form of a connection w/ snow flower and lily (or at least not replicate the one i had in the book) or nina and sophia. just like the book it tried to appeal to white audiences way too heavily by mixing the mandarin with english cause there are far too many people in this world who won’t watch a film cause it would require them to read captions…pretty visuals though
blog post! “the problem w/ lisa see” (abt the book rather than the film)
