I tried to give this Dutch classic a try since I live here. Not sure what the point of any of it was. At the exception of a couple of decent gags like the people looking through the window or the statue of Saint Francis coming to life, I didn't find The Northerners funny at all. I want to believe the director was trying to say something about misogyny and racism in Dutch society, but the lack of nuance or substance says otherwise. The film's visual language is compelling enough and the performances are fine, yet I can't wrap my head around why this hollow provocation is such a cult favourite
