i watched an indian film called leo a while ago and really enjoyed it for what it was, loud, stylish, over-the-top. so i was really excited going into this knowing that film was loosely based on this. i expected something similar, maybe not the same energy, but at least the same kind of vibe.
turns out, it’s a completely different beast. while leo takes a full-blown action route, this one stays quiet, cold, and unnerving. same basic setup, but totally different tone. cronenberg keeps everything so stripped down, there’s barely any music, barely any buildup, just this slow burn of tension that makes every outburst of violence hit harder.
viggo mortensen is incredible in it. he doesn’t say much, but you can feel everything boiling under the surface. and the way the film questions identity, guilt, and whether people can really change… it’s way more thoughtful than i expected.
funny how the same story can be told in such wildly different ways.
