The Death Kiss
“I can remember when murders were nice, clean, simple things done with machine guns and meat axes.”
The opening scene is so much fun, probably the strongest sequence of the whole film. The fakeout on top of a fakeout is so much fun and caught me off guard a little bit. It’s pretty fascinating to me seeing something so old show this sort of story of studio negligence and sensationalizing an on-set death of an actor, not what I thought would go down here for sure. I’m not a big fan of David Manners, but I have to admit that this is the most agency I’ve ever seen a character of his possess. He’s not getting cucked by Boris Karloff or Bela Lugosi or Karloff AND Lugosi, and I think that’s beautiful.
