For most of my life, Gavin Creel's Bill has been as much a part of my Christmas traditions as Kevin McCallister, Clark Griswold, or the Grinch. Eloise at Christmastime premiered on abc in 2003 to the sheer delight of my sister, myself, and so many others. It isn't Christmas without a visit to Eloise's dreamy little world. The highlight of her life at the Plaza is her friendship with Bill, a waiter/actor played by the inimitable, phenomenal, desperately talented, Gavin Creel.
His romantic storyline has always been my favorite thing about this film. The scenes where he dances and sings are pure magic. He was just so damn good. The scene where he dances around in the snow is so deliciously sweet and romantic. I've been freaking out about that moment for 21 years and I plan to continue doing so forever.
I was so shocked to hear that he had passed in September. He seemed like such a genuinely beautiful person who meant everything to so many people. He was so spectacularly gifted in a way that makes me sure he will never ever be forgotten. I know he will always always always make me smile when I watch this and he will always be a highlight of my Christmas celebrations.
