it’s completely unfair that woody allen made this film, because i love it so.
“it has universality but no objectivity.”
again, im completely besotted with the cinematography, the costuming, the lighting and the sheer amount of emotional nostalgia conveyed! i love this film especially for its portrayal of the twenties in paris. the nostalgia i feel akin with gil is something else. nostalgia is all i can think of sometimes. i feel the same as gil about everything…i love this movie so much. what gil says about nostalgia and trying to escape our present reminds me of a tiktok comment i saw about it; “we’re all living in someone else’s golden era— let’s enjoy it for them.” this movie was my escapism, for it applies to everything. i read to escape my reality, i watch movies to escape my reality, i listen to music to escape my reality. what i should be doing is living; but as of now, i am only surviving.
—“wonderful, but forgettable.” —“dripping with sexual innuendo, carnal to the point of smouldering and yes, she’s beautiful, but it’s a subtle beauty, an implied sensuality.” —“i think a woman is equal to a man in courage.” — “artists are like children.” —“all cowardice comes from not loving, or not loving well, which is the same thing.” —“if its bad, ill hate it because i hate bad writing. if its good, ill be envious and hate it even more.” —“every street, every boulevard is its own special art form.” —“and when you think that in the cold, violent meaningless universe, that paris exists…these lights..i mean come on, there’s nothing happening on jupiter or neptune..but from way out in space you can see these lights, the cafes, people drinking and singing. for all we know, paris is the hottest spot in the universe.” —“you’re very kind, but i wouldn’t call my babbling poetic.” —“you inhabit two worlds. i see nothing strange.” —“i see a photograph. i see a film.i see an insurmountable problem. i see…a rhinoceros.” —“the artist’s job is not to succumb to despair but to find an antidote for the emptiness of existence.” —“you have a clear and lively voice, don’t be such a defeatist.” —“but i did feel, for a minute there while i was doing it, like i was immortal.” —“well it’s the present, it’s dull.” —“this is the time we live in.“—“i was trying to escape my present the same way you're trying to escape yours to the golden age.” —“i have to get rid of my illusions, and that i’d be happier in the past is one of them.” —“it was a bad decision, but at least it was a choice.”
“that’s, you know, what the present is. it’s a little unsatisfying because life’s a little unsatisfying.”
