Pretty solid for a movie that’s over 80 years old. The story is definitely the best part for sure, the acting is not the greatest but that’s kind of to be expected for old movies. The music is solid, the characters do feel genuine, they aren’t outlandish so that’s a plus. It’s kind of a sad movie in a way, showing the great depression and how people had to survive through it but it did end on a pretty optimistic and hopeful conclusion. I’d give it a watch, I’ll probably rewatch it.

realized just after watching this that this was made one year after the book came out!! holy shit!! this was still like an active issue as the film was released!! i was gonna make some pithy point about how i preferred the ending of the book (the image of rose of sharon breastfeeding that man in the barn has stuck with me for years now), but i do think it was the right decision to end on a more upbeat note given the time period... especially now like so true that mutual aid is the only thing that will save us. we are the only people who can help ourselves. goddamn. and henry fonda's big beautiful eyelashes too
