Form without function. This movie is like The Prestige x Joe Biden. Starts off so interesting, then noticably loses track of where it’s going, and finally ends up somewhere sinister. Also there are carnies.
The visuals were great, Cooper & Defoe are great, and the general creepiness was great. But that eerie vibe devolves into macabre and offputting stuff for no real reason. If you like del Toro’s artistic styling you’ll be happy, otherwise confused. Not a true swing & miss, more a foul ball.
