This is another movie to add to the list of sci-fis with a solid premise, decent cast and visuals, and some redeeming moments along the way that are ultimately spoiled by the writing which is about as boring and safe as you can get for the concept. I think it’s just something that comes with these types of sci-fis and that makes me sad especially when it was one with such a decent budget, I just can’t help but wonder why these scripts can’t utilize more emotion or animation, I get these kids were born in space and drugged their whole lives but I’d have liked the chance to see them explore their emotions more than just fighting snd the obvious. Unfortunately if you’ve read the book it’s impossible not to compare this to Lord of the Flies as the concepts are pretty much the same with a setting change and while I enjoy William Golding’s book more I’d say I enjoyed this setting for the concept more, I’m pretty sure that’s just because of my affinity for sci-fis but I’m sticking with it because it really works for me. I’m mostly being negative in this review but there were plenty of times I was considering a higher rating with Lily-Rose Depp, Tye Sheridan, Fionn Whitehead, and of course Collin Farrell all doing what they could to elevate this scriptand the story had some intriguing turns that I had fun following. Sadly with every intriguing turn the story offered there was another I’ve seen in movies dozens of times, and with the script being a letdown I’m sad to say there was a lot of great potential here hindered by a few things and ultimately wasted because of them. Still a very enjoyable movie that doesn’t deserve the harsh average rating it has and one that I could certainly see myself revisiting some years down the line, I’m sure I’ll always be a sucker for these kinds of YA sci-fis and I can respect ones like this even if they’re nothing special.
