Three convicts escape from prison on Devil's Island just before Christmas and arrive at a nearby French colonial town. They go to the store of the Ducotels, the only store that gives supplies on credit. They initially intend to take advantage of them but have a change of heart after they find the family is in financial troubles.

merry christmas, and happy birthday to humphrey bogart! he's hilarious in this movie, and isn't he just adorable in that little pink apron? i need to watch more of his films in general, but i'm definitely curious about seeing him do more comedy. loved it!

Couldn’t ask for a more charming group of criminals. The ending was not exactly what i would’ve picked, but the snake halo got me good

Fun to see in Vistavision in the big theater, but stacked up against so many other bangers, this one falls short. The comedy feels pretty quaint and dated, though there were a few super funny moments. The prisoners don’t really do much or go anywhere. It feels like a one location play and that is a hinderance more than an asset here. It didn’t make any sense why they were there so long and their goals kept changing. I did like the snake but I wish they showed it with some goofy effect. The bald guy was my favorite of the prisoners.

A great comedy with a simple formula that works throughout the movie. Bogart is well casted in a role befitting his talents more accurately than movies such as Casablanca.
