Minelli’s debut is this musical about a man attempting to get his redemption after getting a second chance to live, which seems pretty standard classical Hollywood shit, but Cabin in the Sky has something that makes it stand out - it has an all-black cast. This obviously has its issues, given it’s directed by a white man and made in 1943, and it is very much a product of its time. However, it’s still a good movie, that’s wonderfully acted and directed. Ethel Waters was one hell of a singer, and this film even features Louis Armstrong. And Minelli’s camera gets one hell of a start here, I simply adore his staging. He needs only a couple of minutes to get you hooked with an amazing scene at the church. Could have used more musical numbers and better representation, but all in all pretty solid.
