Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills

A bunch of L.A. socialites fraternise in Beverly Hills, getting into obscene situations with socially disastrous consequences in this smug and raunchy satire of the Hollywood 1%. As corrosive a black comedy as any good Paul Bartel film with undoubtedly his sharpest dialogue to date, but it's brought down a bit by the fact that it's juggling a few too many characters for its own good. As it stands, it's still wickedly funny when it hits and rarely holds back in its depiction of these social taboos that its lambasting. Felt like Bartel finally found a motley crew of comedians that bounced off his material well here — if only he got to make more with them.

Recently I had heard of this film when I was doing some research into one of the actors from this film, Rebecca Schaffer (who was murdered by an obsessive fan after watching this film, which after viewing, I have come to the conclusion that this dude was enraged over nothing, she barely did anything), for a film I want to try and write. I bought the Kino Lorber Blu Ray at a pretty hefty sum of $36 on eBay, the most I've ever spent on a standard Blu Ray disc, but it was worth the price. This was great, I thought it was pretty funny as well. This film was basically a Soap Opera but instead of of melodrama it was a melocomedy.

Eerlijk gezegd laat Bartel me een beetje koud. Een sex comedy in de hogere klassen van Beverly Hills. Society van Brian Yuzna kwam hetzelfde jaar uit en volgt ongeveer diezelfde lijn. Dan weer over deze film; ik heb wel respect voor de scriptschrijver, Bruce Wagner, die als zichzelf voorkwam in een van mijn favoriete films, Knight of Cups. Wat blijkt: meneer is een heus gewaarde chroniqueur van Hollywood door de decennia heen. Ook het feit dat Rebecca Schaeffer, die een prima rol vertolkte in deze film, vermoord werd door een fan vanwege een scène in deze film, vergunt het nog wat historische waarde. Ze was dus eerder bekend als een lief, zacht meisje, maar toen de moordenaar, R.J. Bardo, haar in een seksscène zag in deze film, was ze volgens hem, haar onschuldigheid verloren. En zo, ontstond zijn stalkqueeste en uiteindelijk haar moord. Triest. Zo'n schizoïde Hollywood leek ook plausibel in Wagner's Maps of the Stars geregisseerd door Cronenberg. Een beetje vervreemdend deze muur tekst, maar zoiets kan ook over de film gezegd worden. De hulp in het huishouden die ineens heel veel Mexicaanse folklore gaat opnoemen, ja ook. Andere hulpje ontmaagde Rebecca van haar onschuldigheid en lijkt op een kruising tussen Downey Jr en Van Damme. De ander (Beltran) heet Juan, maar op Wong wordt ook geantwoord. Oja, die seksscène komt er niet meer in voor, want, u weet wel.
