Another fantastic piece of observational documentation from Frederick Wiseman. This is one of his earlier works, I found it to be slightly more direct and concentrated than his later stuff, there’s a clear intention here which is really nice. Education is a fascinating and fundamental institution, it moulds the future of society into the members those in power want them to be. Secondary socialisation is a crucial part of establishing a link between childhood and adulthood, the correspondence principle is a key element of this linkage between age; the correspondence principle is the idea that education mirrors the workplace and shapes students into obedient workers for the bourgeoisie. There are many criticisms of education, from all kinds of sociological perspectives, but there’s no doubt it’s one of the most important aspects of life for everyone. Our society is based upon educational achievement and meritocracy, and school is the root of these fundamentals. Wiseman really manages to capture the essence of school life while also keeping up a constant focus on the core principles of education and what it should be, as always he’s completely unbiased and lets the teachers and students speak for themselves.
