Had to deal with switching my phone volume up and down constantly for the duration of the film - turned it all the way up because I couldn’t hear a thing when they spoke, then turned it DOWN when they broke into song (because those mics were almost TOO on)
The two choirs unite, but this shit is SO UNCOMFORTABLE - the film tries so hard to vilify Andrea when her reactions are completely valid.
One of the characters says “We united two very different kinds of people” Okay buddy… whatever that means… the only decent thing is that the Hawthorne choir get the prize at least, even though it’s handed to them by the winning gospel choir and the white choir will probably rub their white saviour complexes in their faces for the rest of their lives.
And it ends with a short and really awkward kiss between Zachary and Savannah.
Yikes… the thing is, the guy who plays Zachary and the girl who plays Andrea are genuinely good singers, especially Andrea. Shame they’re stuck in this racist ass film.
Agonisingly slow pacing, unlikeable characters, covert racism, Mles (who looked like an evil Robbie Shapiro if he lost the curls). Did I mention that the pacing is REALLY REALLY REALLY* SLOW?? I literally had this film on 2x speed and it STILL dragged. Uuuuuuuuughhhhhhhh this film just left a bad taste in my mouth.
