High School Musical turns 20 this year. That alone boggles me. "What do you mean Zac Efron has been in the public eye for so long?" I ask myself, "Surely it has not been twenty years."
Whatever the case, I memorialize the 20th anniversary by not watching High School Musical, but rather watching this faith based knockoff film from... the guys at the Asylum?
Yeah, the story goes that they went to some film conference, were told faith based films were doing well, realized they could make money that way too, and made this under the "Faith Films" banner.
Admittedly, I don't hate it. It's competently made but nowhere near the film that inspired it, and I find the "oh we won but we're giving you the prize" trope so dull and so expected that it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. This certainly wasn't starting careers for its cast like High School Musical did, save for that guy who later did The Social Network, but it's actually one of the better efforts from the Sharknado people.
