kamal hassan’s artistic vision comes through very strong in this movie and at its core carries it to the very end. potent emotions like the scene of aparna being murdered, striking metaphorical visuals like mythili turning into a gun when making love and jarring choices like presenting the present in black and white instead of the past. on paper the idea of a man learning to love something out of his obsessive hatred is beautiful however i think at times the movie is a little unfocused and loses a sense of drive. the inclusion of shah rukh khan’s amjad works for the most part but seems abit narratively ‘convenient’. but overall a great view of a the impact the partition had on the lives of common man. a bold and admirable swing from ulaga nayagan.
