Not the COMPLETE shitshow I was expecting; it’s really the fact that all this is so uninspired that’s the biggest issue, particularly when it’s trying to ape a style that needs constant creativity to keep it from being a one trick-pony.
That is, until it chooses to ditch the sitcom format almost entirely thirty minutes in. Perhaps a feature-length Too Many Cooks/Alan Resnick style wouldn’t work anyways, but I honestly woulda preferred that compared to the inherent boredom that sets in as backstories and motivations come to light and the filmmakers actually have to make, you know, a movie. And I can say they’re even worse at that than the Adult Swim-parody rip-off shit before.
The actors are passable at being over-the-top I guess, but have no presence beyond the shtick itself, making everyone come off as a bit too meta for me. In Natural Born Killers, Rodney Dangerfield apparently didn’t understand the dark humor of the sitcom scene at all, yet he just played himself without the yucks and it turned out great. It seems like the negative inverse happened here, with most of the cast too winky and self-aware of their own chaotic environment, which I would prefer them not to be. Alicia Silverstone seems to be only one that goes over-the-top and actually feels believable, which I definitely can’t say for Nick Frost and his intentionally dumb-sounding accent.
There’s blown up heads, crucifixions, crack addictions, sorta-kinda necrophilia, and Kevin Connolly as Jesus, but there’s no sting or bite or laugh that you choke on for its tastelessness (there’s barely any laughter period, but you know what I mean). It’s all just cheap and boring, with a very outdated idea on what edge is.
Yeah, I don’t know. Natural Born Killers used it as commentary. That awesome 20 minute sequence in Mr. Robot season 2 used it as a way to show a character trying to block out physical pain happening in the moment, and just a fun excuse to dick around stylistically. And Adult Swim infomercials like Too Many Cooks are just fuckin weird, and relish in weird creativity for you to pay attention. And they’re all SHORT.
Which again, technically all the sitcom stuff’s short here as well. But still, very disappointing to have that as your concept to draw audiences in and then do absolutely nothing with it. The krazier for kokoa puffs this gets, the sleepier you’ll feel, even in the middle of the day. Trust me.
