Helsinki, 1945. The end of the war brings a new sense of artistic and social freedom for painter Tove Jansson. While focusing her artistic dreams on painting, the enchanting tales of the ‘Moomin’ creatures she told to scared children in bomb shelters, rapidly take on a life of their own, bringing international fame.

Tove
The way she spent half her life thinking she was an artistic failure and not knowing how much she was loved and still found the bravery and patience to start again and find joy (the beginner!!!) Tove you are forever my inspiration. The film never tried to simplify or explain her relationships and struggles or turn it into a slumdog millionaire film. The visuals were lovely. Nordic films simply cannot keep getting away with this.

I love Tove Jansson, but I don’t think this movie did her justice. In particular I thought it a shame that the movie prioritises the rocky relationship with her father and mostly ignores her mother, who was a deeply important person to Tove. Her death is what lead to the end of the moomin book series after all…
