For something that’s meant to be a prequel this is so remake-y
I think why the monster isn’t so effective in this is that they don’t let it linger. In the original moments with the monster would be more impactful, while in this everything is so fast paced you barely get a good look at the monster before something else is happening. Like I don’t know how an cgi creature looks worse than practical effects but I think it definitely has a lot to do with how the creature is filmed. Also as a result of how fast paced it is, it really takes away the paranoia of the original. Sure there are moments where it would have you guessing, like when Kate initially explained the creature to everyone and suspicion was beginning to be placed on certain characters, but this paranoia is extremely short lived because basically the scene after It’s revealed Juliette was the thing. Like the movie was just so fast paced it loses the slow building paranoia of the original.
Another thing I disliked is how certain scenes were basically beat for best copies of the original. If you’re supposed to be a prequel and not a remake, maybe try to make the movie not have scenes that are almost thematically identical to ones from the original. Like the scene where Edvard transformed was basically was so similar to the Palmer scene from the original, even to the point where the part where Jonas was being assimilated was basically exactly the same as windows from the original. Also I thought the fillings thing was kind of stupid. Like yes im glad they went with something different to the blood test from the original, but its so ineffective like so many people don’t have fillings I think that test cleared like 4 people in the movie. The blood test in the original was definite, it proved 100% whether you were or were not infected. It felt like they threw that test in there as an obligation rather than a necessity.
Also I thought showing us the monster escaping from the ice was stupid as well. They show us the whole monster in its entire glory like 20 minutes in, and once the monster has been revealed all tension and build up is practically destroyed. I feel like it woudve been a better choice to show the empty ice block, implying that the monster had escaped, and creating paranoia as to where the thing was now, and whether anyone has been assimilated, rather than showing us the thing busting out of the ice.
Also the characters are just so forgettable. To write this review I had to search up literally every characters name, even the main character. Like yes, the original definitely wasn’t character based either, but for a movie like this which attempts to build depth for some of its cast, there all just so forgettable, and atleast by the end of the original I knew the main character and a fair few of the side characters names.
This movie suffers from fast pacing, and a fatal misinterpretation of what made the original good.
