I was pleasantly surprised that even though it starts out feeling like a highly competent paint-by-numbers sports movie, there’s a lot of small moments that pay off in the third act. Like a steadfast fighter pacing themselves toward a strong final blow, this story’s final act is the strongest and my favorite part of the film. As a fan of her cinematography, I was excited to see Rachel Morrison as the director. Even though she wasn’t the DOP here, her style is still present and I had fun paying attention to possible ways she was prioritizing the visual storytelling. If so, they still didn’t overshadow other aspects of the movie. I also liked the editing and Ryan Destiny with Brian Tyree Henry were great leads!
