A very entertaining action-comedy neo-western. Corbucci is a master in his own way and deserves as much praise as Sergio Leone. Great action, characters, and music.
Franco Nero and Tomas Millian shine as the “unmatched, yet matchless” Yodlaf Peterson, a sleazy Swedish arms dealer, and El Vasco, a bandit-turned-revolutionary. It makes me wish that Compañeros was a trilogy between the two. Jack Palance also makes for a fantastically pulpy villain with a backstory so goofy, it’s kind of awesome.
Ennio Morricone’s over the top and sometimes psychedelic score elevates the expected chaotic violence of a Corbucci western.
The cinematography announces itself as charmingly tacky with classic spaghetti western zooms and quick cuts, but has that Sergio Corbucci feel.
To be expected, Corbucci and his team can’t really write a good romance nor sexual tension to save his life and the only blight on the wonderfully campy performances is Karin Schubert. She is genuinely awful in this film and her scenes feel like a cringe-inducing lead-in to a porno scene. But that can be forgiven since she doesn’t really have a huge role.
This is one of my favourite spaghetti westerns and it deserves so much more recognition.
