Salvador handelt vom militärischen Konflikt in El Salvador in den 1980ern, vom 12-jährigen Bürgerkrieg zwischen von der USA unterstützen Regierung und kommunistischen Guerillakämpfern. Dieser Konflikt ist ein grausames Ergebnis des kalten Krieges. Extreme Armut prägte das Land, Unterdrückung war allgegenwärtig, wobei diese in sogenannten Todesschwadronen mündeten, die praktisch wahllos Zivilisten hinrichteten. 75.000 Tote forderte dieser innere Konflikt in diesem Land voll Elend und Repression. Chaos und Ungewissheit ist allgegenwärtig, es gibt nichts Gutes, keinen gerechtfertigten Kampf, alle Werte scheinen hinfällig; die bösen kämpfen gegen noch grausamere als sie selbst, wobei dieses Maß sich doch nur zu gerne verschiebt und die Seiten wechselt. Selbst westliche Werte sind vollkommen scheinheilig, sind nichts-sagend. Krieg, Leid und Tod wird immer weiter fortgeführt und unterstützt, selbst im Film fliehen wir vor ihm, können nichts gegen ihn tun, außer ihn zu dokumentieren. Grausamkeit wird ewig fortbestehen, es scheint wie ein ewiger Kreislauf, selbst wie eine Art Naturgesetz, dass ungebrochen währt. James Woods gibt eine fantastische Darbietung, voll Dramatik und Tragik. Er ist ein Mann, der es in seinem Leben zu nichts gebracht hat, doch im Angesicht des Erfolgs, im Momentum, zumindest für jemand andren ein Vermächtnis zu schaffen, wird ihm dieser Erfolg genommen. Dieser Film gibt keinen Erfolg, keine Erlösung. Oliver Stone zeigt uns ein deprimierendes Bild des Menschen, dass er sich scheinbar niemals ändern mag und ewig in einem Zustand der Unvollkommenheit verbleibt.

Salvador deals with the military conflict in El Salvador in the 1980s, the 12-year civil war between the US-backed government and communist guerrilla fighters. This conflict was a cruel result of the Cold War. Extreme poverty characterized the country, oppression was everywhere, and this led to so-called death squads that executed civilians practically at will. This internal conflict claimed 75,000 lives in a country full of misery and repression. Chaos and uncertainty are pervasive; there is nothing good, no justifiable fight, all values seem meaningless; the evil fight against those even more cruel than themselves, whereby this measure is only too willing to shift and change sides. Even Western values are completely dishonest, meaningless. War, suffering, and death continue and are promoted; even in the film, we flee from it, unable to do anything about it except to document it. Cruelty will continue forever; it seems like an eternal cycle, even a kind of law of nature that continues without interruption. James Woods gives a fantastic performance, full of drama and tragedy. He is a man who has achieved nothing in his life, but in the face of success, in the momentum of creating a legacy, at least for someone else, this achievement is taken away from him. This film offers no success, no redemption. Oliver Stone shows us a depressing picture of humanity, which seems incapable of change and remains forever in a state of incompleteness.
