If I separate the man from the art then I found it to be a very entertaining. I laughed. I felt things. He tapped into very real things for me and our times. Maybe it’s because I just today had a hard conversation about honesty with my ex girlfriend but, he said a lot of things that I want to sit with and reflect on. Mostly in regards to family and being a more forthright person.
If I integrate the man and the art then I found it to be slightly disingenuous. Slightly. Especially in the beginning. I personally think he wasted an opportunity to talk about the allegations. He almost got there. I could hear the point he was almost making but it wasn’t strong enough. I don’t know if he has privately apologized to the woman that he has wronged. I’m not sure if he needs to publicly apologize. But I do think he could have set a stronger example of what shouldn’t have happened and what should happpen in the future.
I think the point of the special is that we all fuck up and all we can do better at owning and making amends for our mistakes. Whether you believe he is genuine in his recovery or you think he’s just cashing in, is up to you. For me, he spoke truths that I needed to hear and that doesn’t make them less true just because he may or may not have been faking his sincerity.
There’s really no way to talk about this special without becoming the thing he talks about in it.
P.S. I generally enjoy Aziz in tv and movies but he can have a way of delivering stand up that I can definitely see rubbing people the wrong way.
