❝They don't care nothin' about me. All they want is my voice. Well, I done learned that. And they gonna treat me the way I wanna be treated, no matter how much it hurt them.❞

Wow. Without a doubt, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom has Chadwick Boseman's best performance; absolutely brilliant, God rest his soul. And of course the queen Viola Davis killed it as the iconic, bi, 'Mother of the Blues' Ma Rainey. I'm always in awe of her talent, and she deserves an Oscar for a leading role immediately. I really liked the supporting cast too: Colman Domingo is quickly becoming one of my favourite actors, and I felt that his performance as Cutler brought the entire cast together, similar to how Cutler was central to the band. His banter with Toledo and Slow Drag was so natural and likeable, as was his palpable dislike for Levee. There was so much tension throughout the film undercut by moments of laughter or anger (mostly the latter), and it was accompanied by gorgeous music.
Maybe I'm just biased; if there's blues, my mood instantly improves by fifty percent, but I genuinely really liked this film.
