Cry Baby, a strong and sensitive girl, is sent off to a disturbing sleepaway school that’s hidden underneath a grandiose façade. Luckily, she has a sweet and unapologetic best friend who sticks up for her when she gets bullied by the other students whose brains are under control by the Principal and his wicked staff. With the help of the magical friends they meet along the way, as well as an Angelic Spirit Guide, they are able to gain the strength they need to fight off the school’s belligerent patriarchal conditioning.

its giving “we live in a society”
i watched this when it first came out and i was in like 6th grade and i thought it was okay. It popped up in my feed while i was looking for a movie and thought sure!
Genuinely this might be one of the most confusing things i’ve ever watched. Like i get it, it’s a visual concept album that tackles political and societal issues. but it also does so in a way where we don’t know what is actually effecting the story. Wheels on the bus sets up that whatever she sings is what is happening, which is dropped during Principal, where she is transported to another plane of reality?? Then it stays like that, where it’s music videos interrupted by little skits until the end when the music actually has effects on the plot?? idk.
and the way she “tackles” issues in this film is lowkey ridiculous. having a character show up, sing a little song, then basically never seeing them again isn't “tackling an issue” it’s just trying to get woke points. My biggest example of this is with the trans character that was fired and then you NEVER SEE OR HEAR FROM HER AGAIN. LIKE WHY WAS SHE THERE?? and then during strawberry shortcake melanie uses the “boys are raised that way” argument which is…um….an argument used by TERFs so maybe like dont.
I feel like melanie cant write about things she hasn’t experienced, i feel like the songs where she is talking about celebrity culture (drama club, lunchbox friends, show and tell) are the strongest but have the least impact on the actual story but songs like teachers pet lacks any sort of vulnerability and unawareness that you would see in a victim of grooming. i almost feel like teachers pet is victim blamey.
also there is like a weird implication that shes jesus
anyways aesthetically speaking it’s very pretty and some of the songs are alright. it’s also really cool it’s free to watch on youtube.
