“Everyone I know teaches me things.”
Wow I’m so surprised I’ve never heard of this movie. This was Dustin Hoffman fresh off The Graduate/Midnight Cowboy and Mia Farrow with Rosemarys Baby. They both have such an insane screen presence that bring such different elements. This may not be a perfect movie or feel like it has as much depth as say the prior works they’re coming off of, but I don’t think it’s “not saying anything.” There was so much I enjoyed the way this was put together, the true inner dialogue voice overs, the flashbacks. Some of the sequences almost felt like daydream scenarios of the one listening, creating a blunt/exaggerated visual image of the words they’re hearing from the other. Although not much is happening technically, this still feels very human in a lot of ways. You’re watching these very different characters be skeptical of each other in different but similar ways. Idk this worked for me in ways I can’t even think of rn despite how dry it may feel, that’s kind of life. And that’s how I feel about it first watch! If you like before sunrise you’d probably like this. Score by Quincy jones too.
- “What did you say your name was?”
“I didn’t say, what’s yours?”
- “Everyone I know teaches me things.”
- “You’re not good are you? By any horrible chance?”
- “I can just vanish.”
- “Officer I’m looking for a street with trees. It’s a very respectable area. Only one or two stabbings a week.”
- “Let’s face it buddy, you don’t know where the hell you wanna go.”
- “Running away from each other won’t work anymore will it?”
