30 FOREIGN FILMS IN MARCHPIT STOP 25: UKRAINE

This story delves into a post war zone of Ukraine and the impacts the war has had on the region and its people. It does it in a slow way which grabs you and lets it linger on the sheer impact of what the war has done to the society. The effects of war on people shown through PTSD, suicide, questioning and still a disagreeing society. Looking at a still heavily present military on a more and more non habitable area and volunteering to help with locating and trying to identify bodies left behind after having work cut seemed what most of the community do and try to help. The filmography was simple and effective showing the detail of war and the effect it’s had on the landscape and the people. Showing some of the opportunities presented and how people live with the effects of war was done well and helped engage the story.

So from a production point of view this is everything I want; framing, bleak, dark, slow, beautiful, locations, depth of focus, industrial...it reminded me of a lot of great Eastern European cinema!
