Came for a female protagonist mental health story, stayed for the cosmologic boom boom
Genuinely found this movie extremely stressful and hard to watch, but 20m after the end that feeling faded to a deep appreciation for this movie’s depiction of depression.
So real, so developed. Didn’t fall into any of the usual traps. Dunst is so good, with her present-but-absent affect. You can see in her face that her character is trying, but seems clearly dimmed. On the night she should be happiest, she feels nothing and can barely sustain any effort. What’s more, she’s suffocated by everyone’s expectation she perform joy she can’t access. Yet throughout the movie, her character is treated in a tender way. We are always on her side, even others find her broken or weak. Really powerful stuff.
I can’t really recommend this to anyone because it is intense but if you wanna brave the gauntlet, it’s gorgeous and moving
