Fora essa conclusão tenebrosa, muito legal novamente ver como o Obayashi constroi o universo dos seus filmes, tudo é tão vivido e preenchido como se estivesse pulando pra fora da tela. Girl, so confusing.

this movie also has an anime adaptation based on the same book, but i watched the live action due to it being made by nobuhiko obayashi and it didn't disappoint whatsoever. i rlly enjoyed this movie, it feels really nostalgic and even melancholic at certain moments. never has a movie flowed so freely like this has. genuinely this movie was so unique when it came to pacing and structure in its storytelling and it was a joy to watch. this movie is so refreshingly beautiful, i haven't watched a nobuhiko obayashi movie in a while so watching this rlly refreshed and reminded my memory on how great this man was at visual storytelling and how he uses these surreal moments to explore the most random shit. that time travel sequence was actually so fucking beautiful and i could've watched that for years, the music playing in the background while these experimental like stop motion shots were in the background with these rlly silly edited clocks and blue screened characters floating around was so strange and visceral and i loved it. this movie has such a great impact on my thoughts on love, u never truly forget someone, despite if u forget their name or their personality u will always truly remember someone in ur heart. that's what this movie taught me, the romance in this was just fantastic. the themes of manipulation and time travel both worked so well and this being made by nobuhiko obayashi is just so genius, he's one of the most underrated film makers and even tho house/hausu is really popular i do wish the rest of his filmography got popular and more noticed because they're all really good and all (imo) have the same energy that hausu did, visual wise and energy wise.

Director- Obayashi Nobuhiko.This is the second Obayashi that I have seen and least to say, I was disappointed.The acting was decent but the plot wasn't engaging enough to allow the acting to take a back seat.The vfx was nothing short of bad. The sequences where she was traveling through time looked quite ghastly.This managed to make an okayish movie on such an interesting topic of time travel.The movie tries to pull our strings of nostalgia to make us enjoy the work but it fails to do so for me.The protagonist had too easy of a time while dealing with her time traveling. She should have shown to have at least some fear rather than just curiosity.The protagonist also doesn't battle wanting to live in the past which could have been a good conflict.The earthquake and fire that occur on day one lead nowhere and could just have been cut to just one event thereby giving more time to character development.The reveal about the ML being from the future and brainwashing the protagonist et all felt too random and out of place. They should have given us more time with him so we could feel shocked rather than thinking "Oh okay, moving on".The writing was either poor or a big chunk of it was missing as it feels half-baked, (incomplete).The runtime is too short to accommodate the lofty ideas of this film. For example, this lacks an entire arc of the protagonist dealing with feelings for another character as well as the ML.The time-traveling mechanics aren't explained in enough detail.The ending was nice with the ML walking by the protagonist and her not recognizing him.

Most people who have heard of Nobuhiko Obayashi know him for his midnight classic House, but his filmography remains largely underseen and underappreciated by the wider cinephile community. Much of that is because of how much of his catalog remains unavailable outside of bootlegs or pirating and much of that also feels like a genuine ignorance to the man's work. The Little Girl Who Conquered Time is only my fourth Obayashi but the variety and scope of his projects continues to astonish me. Here I found the most emphasis so far on Obayashi's sentimentality and romance, something that was an element of something like Labyrinth of Cinema but not the main focus. The Little Girl Who Conquered Time contains a lot of trademark Obayashi-isms in its willingness to embrace heightened reality and showcase a more emotional form of filmmaking. There's a few sequences here that are truly exceptional: the opening ski sequence, the extended timeline jumping near the end, the confession, even the end credits harbor a lot of nostalgia and joy that you wouldn't be able to pick up on amidst the chaos of House unless you really hone in on it. Obayashi's brilliance in direction helps offset the weakest part of the film which is its script. I feel like it gets a little lost towards the middle, though some of that is explained in the final reveal, and I was not anticipating its pace which doesn't see us really jump through time until almost an hour in. None of these are so egregious that they ruined the experience and I think on a second watch I'll be able to track things more clearly, but it felt like the story was missing something a bit more concrete to connect its themes together. But man Obayashi fills in those gaps and created a film I felt deeply even if I couldn't necessarily articulate the paths it took.
