Immediately starting out with a real piece of work in this one. Shooting birds, cheating, and generally being a nuisance. Later on, he rapes Haru twice. (Astonishingly, there are scenes that were harder for me to watch than these scenes.)
Fortunately, Haru has another option she can go for: Riko, who's...really obsessive, pushy, controlling, etc. So actually not looking that great for Haru.
There's a subplot with a second romance for Riko, too. She breaks an older woman's heart, then gets back with her after sort of breaking things off with Haru. The first time she rejects Tohko, she almost cries in the cafe. The second time she watches Tohko walk off with a smile on her face.
Part of what I think this film is about is not being able to complete yourself with another person. It's an idea that has done massive harm to young people everywhere, leading them to act stupidly, selfishly, ruled by jealousy and fear, wounding the people they supposedly love. And it is exactly this type of wound that actually leaves a hole in your life, leaving you to figure it all out on your own once you're alone.
Watch this movie if you want to repeatedly see the light leave someone's eyes in real time! Might be worth it for the shot of a bottle thrown into the air transforming into a bird and flying away.
Think I'm gonna read the manga it's based on...
very public argument: "You can't understand me because we have different taste." "What is it that I can't understand? I don't fall in love for taste. Haru, you're not in love with your boyfriend. You deceive yourself by feigning acceptance in the name of love, just so you can be with him. You can't leave the relationship because it's simpler for you to indulge in your own weakness. You're just easy for him to have around." "You've never loved a guy. Don't tell me what's wrong with my life." "You look innocent but you're mean! I might not know about men but I've known many people. You just want sex, don't you? You're really pathetic." "Some things you can't say even to your friends! Don't tell me what I'm like! You don't know!" "I'm not finished yet!" "Shut up!" "Hey, sit down! You're wrong! You understand nothing! Why don't you understand that I've never thought of you as a friend? I love you...! I've wanted to be someone special to you. We spend so much time together but you don't get it. I want you in my arms! I want to hold you and kiss you a million times!"
alt. quote, : "One day you'll adapt to the global modern world. Moron."
alt. alt. quote: "Hey, I've got to get going. I'm seeing her today. So let's talk tomorrow."
