" What will you do if she stays in her shell like that forever? "
this is Japan's answer to the post Jurassic Park babydino craze and it's way more sincere than it has any right to be.
little Chie hatches a baby T-Rex in her dad's lab and tries to raise it like a giant , clumsy puppy while the adults argue about science and money , pure Amblin heart with that very '90s Japanese family drama tenderness.
what sells it is that Rex isn't cheap CGI.
the dinosaur effects were provided by Italian effects artist Carlo Rambaldi , the same guy famous for E.T.
Kadokawa actually had the dinosaur suit built by Rambaldi , at a reported cost of five million dollars.
that's why Rex has those same big , sad , human eyes.
you can feel it's the same hand.
yes the third act gets too corporate villain , but when Chie has to let him go it actually hurts.
cheesy and way more moving than i expected.
a great movie to watch during the Christmas season.

This thing entered possible five star territory as soon as I heard the names of the horse and dog. Admittedly, it didn't hold onto that potential through its entire runtime, but this thing is a blast most of the time. I saw someone on twitter say something like, it's better than anything Spielberg ever made, or something to that effect. I don't think I'd go that far, but it's probably better than a good 80 or 90 percent of everything Spielberg ever made. I probably just rate Spielberg lower than most people...

Really beautiful movie! A movie's movie! Really fun set pieces and special effects and I like the title theme. Has a shockingly consistent emotional throughline even though it often forgets about it for zany antics
