Ah I remember when I watched a shitload of these low tier anime movies and here’s one I guess I just never got to, and let me tell you, it’s just like the rest of them, mediocre plot, good emotions, mid animation, and absolutely non-existent story and logical choices. I’ll start with Kanna, she was cool for what she is, a surprisingly captivating backstory and a charming personality, although her motives did seem to clash a lot and I wasn’t really sure where she ends up at the end. That brings me to the other two who were also pretty good, great chemistry with the lead and were entertaining when they needed to be despite their minimal impact on the story in my opinion. Like I said the plot is just alright, nothing special but gives us a reason for her to keep going, even if this movie is more character driven and doesn’t really need a good plot. Now I have 2 big problems with this movie, stakes and logistics. I’ll start with stakes, they are non-existent, like yes I know they tell us why the tension is up or why we need to keep moving, but throughout the journey they don’t seem to actually explain what happens and just explain it as chaos or doom falling which doesn’t cut it for me. Especially in the normal dimension there are zero stakes, like she goes out for a weeks times to her but her father is just thinking she went out for a fee hours, and I know the real world isn’t as prominent here the father is a very important character and should be used as such. And as for the logic, it is thrown out the window, like so many of these netflix anime movies it is just a clusterfuck of constant lore, meaningless dialogue, and especially the contradiction of so many ideas, like just constantly involving new rules to either aid or hurt this journey in some way. I will say other than the character designs which were horrible to tell you the truth, everything else was animated very well and is just held back a bit. Like I mentioned before the father, and he is such a likeable character, for sure my favorite and I don’t really know why he’s just been through so much and still has a smile on his face. Lastly, I wish they explored a little more into Kanna and Yasha’s relationship, I feel like there’s a lot of lingering tension and while I’m not asking for a romance I just wanted them to have a closing scene. All around it’s another Spirited Away, lets be honest.
