Joaquin Phoenix with a generational performance. might actually be my favourite performance from him, which is insane given the shit he's put out over the years.

i loved this movie. it has such a great atmosphere, and just took me away with it for almost 2 hours. there's so many beautiful little details here that make the characters so rich and complex. the writing is so good. the performances are so good. Gaby Hoffmann and Woody Norman are so great too.

i love the cinematography too. it's so crisp. i can't even pinpoint what the black and white is doing, but it's doing something to me. it invokes something very warm.

the whole film is very warm. this is a type of film that gets made quite a bit and we've all seen a few of them, but this really felt so personal and grounded and real. it really felt like it understood each character so well and let them be their truest selves. i love how there's no massive blow up conversation in the climax to resolve any underlying tensions. the drama is in the conversations they have, the differences in beliefs and relationships. 

there was multiple moments i had a wide ass grin on my face from how charming Johnny and Jesse's relationship is. it didn't feel forced at any point; they really sold it to me.

it's annoying talking about a film like this because there's always so much you wanna say and you wanna convey how great you think it is but it seems to just come out as repetitive, jumbled thoughts of everything you felt. I'm sure I'll only like this more as i sit with it. it might even go up to a 5. i just can't even find the words right now.

there's probably loads of details i didn't notice either, but i think my favourite one i realised is how Viv doesn't like giving into her mum's delusions, whereas Johnny does, and Johnny doesn't like giving into Jesse's orphan delusion, but Viv does. they both think the other thing is ridiculous, but ultimately they are the same. I think it was a great point about what we put up with and are willing to deal with for the people we love the most. the type of bond that each character has with their respective person is stronger than reality.

This is one of Phoenix’s best performances and I’m now mad at all the awards snubs for this film. Woody Norman as Jesse turns in one of the elite child actor performances of the decade thus far and has tremendous chemistry with Phoenix’s Johnny.
