Deep in the Himalayas, a group of sherpas kills a gigantic humanoid creature. Convinced that it is the legendary Yeti, Dr. Claire Collier organizes an expedition with her former student Matt Connor and hunter Rondo Montana, among others, to search for more specimens. But what awaits them is something that none of them could have imagined. A colorful fusion of real image and stop-motion that is reminiscent of fantastic films from the 1980s.

The Primevals
the primevals was the passion project of David Allen. development started on this movie all the way back in the late 60s. a full script being finished in the 70s. preproduction officially started in the late 70s before funding fell through. before being picked up again in the 90s. sadly David Allen passed in 1999 before the beautiful and mesmerising stop motion could be finished. finally it was finished and released in 2023.

This movie is extremely fascinating, not only because of its insane production but the story it follows. truly inlove with this film!

The Primevals
The stop motion is cool and the fact that David Allen’s friends stepped in to finish his film after he died is really cool.

Very much inspired from Journey to the center of the Earth. Good blend of reptilians, primates and yetis

The miniature work is also very charming

The Primevals
The background of this film is endlessly interesting, the idea from Puppet Master II director David Allen started ruminating in the 60s before fully coming into its own it the 80s but bankruptcy and funding issues galore along with Allen's untimely death in the late-90s put it on ice. And then a bunch of his friends got together with funds pooled from a Kickstarter to finally get to release it in 2024?? Insane.

It's a fun little adventure film that I honestly wholeheartedly believe that Guillermo Del Toro would EAT TF UP if he watched it. Got that Rankin/Bass stop-motion charm, a handful of solid performances, and a yeti that is just too cool.

A narrative and performances that aren't overly special but I do think the journey to get here is one that can't be beat!
