An absolutely awesome concept with a nonserious mid-80s b-movie approach.
There is an ominious sense in the beginning which makes the viewer well aware that the technology on display is NOT sci-fi, but maybe only a bit of legislation away from reality.
After that, this goes AWOL. Some incredibly ridiculous moments that are also intertwined with some admittedly fun flying scenes; practically this movie is really well done.
Roy Schneider is cool, giving the classic trauma ridden cop with a sketchy past but an unrivaled talent and penchant for danger.
McDowell is an asshole in this, but I love it, and Daniel Stern is the oaf-turned heroic figure.
A lot of normal tropes running through here, with a really cool concept, and some wonky execution make this... decent.
I really look forward to seeing what Christopher Nolan can do with this, becuase the ideas are there, and the ability to twist it to his own capabilities has the possibility of rendering the remake barely identifiable in regard to the original, essentially creating what will feel original.
We shall see.
