Vice squad would be my definition of a perfect film. Everything from the breakneck pace, to the fantastic action, to the unbelievably quotable dialogue, to the stunning cinematography, all of it just makes for a perfect movie. Wings Hauser plays one of the best villains of all time, as a sadistic pimp named Ramrod. I’d argue he’s the best movie pimp of all time, he steals almost every scene he’s in, only being contested by Walsh, who is one of the coolest cop characters in media. What I really admire about this film is that despite the desperation and tension all throughout it, you still get a sense that this movie exists independently of the viewer. There are so many background characters that show up for mere seconds, yet it feels like they have years of backstory behind them. This is just another horrible night in LA for the Vice Squad, and the next night, they’ll have another story like this, we’re only getting a small glimpse into their violent world. This is a masterpiece of a movie and it makes sense that Patrice O’ Neal and Jim Norton loved it, and that Scorsese called it the best film of 1982; it really is one of the best movies of all time, and it’s definitely in my top 10 films.
