Gideon's Trumpet

Henry Fonda in his The Mule Clint era takes on this biographical role of a man wronged by the system and while it has its problems I’m a little surprised by how good of a time I had. The script is a very basic courtroom/prison drama but the effectiveness is there, I like how they kept the pace through transitioning from court to prison scene and the writing mostly in the court deliberations was actually decent stuff. It’s filmed in a blurry way I can only compare to 28 Days Later which might be a common thing for these 80 TV movies for all I know as this is my first one, the cinematography and shot design as a whole is quite basic but the clean editing helps the visual experience a lot. Like Clint’s late-in-career movies Henry Fonda’s lead here is a central focus of the film and since he was such a great actor it works, he has a couple really nice monologues in here and even though the character he’s playing is written quite cold he brings a nice personality to Gideon. I’ll also commend it for not feeling overlong as once I realized this was 2 hours in length I thought it might but it never lost its intrigue for me, especially by bringing in Lane Smith in the last act who I thought was second best of the movie behind Fonda. It might not be anything revolutionary but I had a pretty good time with Gideon’s Trumpet, if you’re like me and always enjoy a courtroom drama a solid watch experience can be found here.
