R.I.P. Robert Duvall

In memory of Robert Duvall and his legacy, I decided to watch a film of his I haven’t seen, George Lucas’ feature length directorial debut THX 1138. A mind numbing sci-fi film set in the year 2112, a totalitarian society that is brainwashing its subjects with medicine. But when two subjects find out the medicine is stopping them from feeling emotions, THX (Robert Duvall) hatches a plan to escape the plain world he’s been conformed to.

An interesting look at how much our society has conformed our brains. It’s like John Carpenter’s look at capitalism with They Live, we’ve been trained to consume. And the film’s look at the importance of human emotions, like love and compassion, drives that idea of us needing to make our own decisions without that voice in your head telling you what’s right and what’s wrong. Obviously I’m too dense to understand Lucas’ point completely, but that’s what I got out of the idea of these masked figures puppeteering humans, removing their emotions and training them to only serve their needs.

this has been on my list since i was a little kid desperately rewatching the star wars special features. and what a first feature film from mr. lucas here! one of the most insane donald pleasence performances ever rendered on celluloid.

even with all of the gross remastered special-edition additions from 2004 (was it necessary to render CGI monkeys that attack robert duvall for less than 10 seconds?), i still really respect lucas's vision here. i can't help but love how insane he is. this was really just a testing ground for a lot of his future work. this is CANON to star wars a background character says wookiee at one point! CANON!!
