First watch of the year and the completion of my Robert Eggers marathon. I love Eggers so much, his commitment to accuracy, his passion for these historic pieces, absolutely breathtaking shots; easily a top 3 director for me at the moment.
Featuring some of the most badass shit I’ve ever seen in a movie, Skarsgard is made for this role too everyone kills it.
As much as I enjoyed this, most Eggers films to me are slightly held back by his stubbornness to concede accuracy and ambiance in return for things that audiences want more (better pacing, more complex characters, etc). I get that this is a retelling of Norse folklore and characters passed down oratorically are kind of meant to be one dimensional for ease of story. But sometimes some characters can feel like foils of themselves in a way that brings me out of it a little. Saying things like “I have known nothing but hate all of my life” makes sense for a Homer-esque warrior but feels shallow and leaves me wanting more from a character we’re supposed to spend 2 hours with.
Regardless, I think Eggers nailed his vision here and the 2nd half is incredible.
The VVitch> Lighthouse > Northman > Nosferatu
