Forgive my griping, I’ve been watching a lot of opaque European films lately, and let me just say I’m glad Pedro Almodovar exists, and is a narrative-driven filmmaker. He’s a Hitchcock, complete with twists and Freud, and colour. Love his style. You can relax into his films. This one toes the line between appropriately horny and in bad taste. And terrific performances.

He’s a Hitchcock, complete with twists and Freud, and colour. Love his style. You can relax into his films. This one toes the line between appropriately horny and in bad taste. And terrific performances.

I honestly don’t even know what to say. I really have no idea what this movie is trying to convey to the audience. In certain ways this movie feels so eerie and claustrophobic well before the explicit turn. The way things are slowly revealed kept the film slightly engaging yet incredibly confusing. 

Benigno’s character was provocative to say the least. His transformation from stalker to full on rapist was done well. It felt a bit shocking yet at the same time very expected. His attachment to Alicia was just too unhealthy for something not to go wrong. 

I don’t think this film needed to be shot in scope. I hate scope and I feel like it was used half well half poorly. The direction in general was ok, nothing more. 

Now the silent film scene had me dead. Starts out fine and then takes this very unexpected turn which later foreshadowed later events, or could have been used to represent the rape without showing it. 

What I really don’t understand is why people think we are meant to sympathize for the men. We obviously aren’t. If we were, Pedro wouldn’t have made them so unlikeable and boring. By the end we hate both of them. This just goes to show that men will never gaf if their friend assaults someone. In men’s eyes, it just doesn’t seem to be a big deal.

Being a film written by a gay man about straight men abusing their power over comatose women, I don’t understand why people call this film a rape sympathy film. I truly don’t think that is the point. If anything it seems like the film tries to point out men’s behavior towards each other and towards women. 

Overall this film is all over the place but definitely achieves one thing: it makes you think and question what the film is about. However I can say that I am stumped. It feels like trying to solve a math problem only to find it undefined. This leads to both frustrations and conversations.
